iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak by GreenPois0n in the Works

We have got iOS 5 tethered jailbreak, but not perfect to use and still not work on iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, so everyone is asking when the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is coming, the answer is no one knows. The good news is the people behind Greenpois0n are hard at work at turning their exploits into a easy to use jailbreak. P0sixninja tweeted:

Sorry for being quiet. I’ve been in Atlanta visiting my family. Should have enough for iPhone4s now, thanks to all the donations!!

According JBN the best estimate for a release time would be any time in November. The jailbreak is in its early stages and needs to be refined before it is released. One key thing to note is that the jailbreak will work for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 both special because they are built with an A5 processor. The exploits used will not be permanent like the limera1n exploit because they rely on software and not hardware. The new jailbreak will most likely keep the Greenpois0n name and act as an update to the older version. Hopefully we can get an official statement from P0sixninja in the near future.

Semitether Jailbreak Gets Updated to Solve Early Issues

Apple News

BigBoss has updated his Semitether Jailbreak package to solve some of the issues experienced by beta testers.

A semi-tethered jailbreak is an interim solution which solves the problem of being unable to reboot with a tethered jailbreak. The semi tethered jailbreak by BigBoss will allow you to reboot on the road, but with limited functionality. It is enough that you are no longer stranded, and you can use your phone, text, and many other features. This is just until you get home and can use redsn0w again to "just boot tethered". Once you do that, you're back to fully functional state.

What's New:
● Reworked the app sync conflicts
● Reworked daemon loading order to hopefully solve 2 issues.
1) Reboot after 2 mins on some devices
2) app sync with itunes issue on some devices.

Note: This version now takes 60-90 seconds after reboot and it will respring again then your device should be usable.

You can find instructions on how to install the Semitether here.

BigBoss Releases Semitethered Jailbreak for iOS 5

Apple News

BigBoss has announced the release of Semitethered jailbreak solution for iOS 5.

As you may know, iOS5 currently has a tethered jailbreak. This means that after you have jailbroken and installed most stuff you care about, you go to reboot your device, and it will no longer boot. You will be either stuck at apple logo forever, or you will get to itunes restore screen. When this happens, you have to hook up to your computer and use redsn0w "just boot" feature which gets you rebooted successfully again.

To get us through this period, I have worked on a semi-tethered solution. The semi-tethered jailbreak will allow you to reboot on the road, but with limited functionality. It is enough that you are no longer stranded, and you can use your phone, text, and many other features. This is just until you get home and can use redsn0w again to "just boot tethered". Once you do that, you're back to fully functional state.

Below is a list of what can be done with a semi-tethered jailbreak. Remember this is only if your phone accidentally powers off and you don't have access to RedSn0w to boot tethered.

1) Can use phone, sms (text messages)
2) Can use every other stock app on iphone.
3) Cannot use mobile safari
4) Can use other appstore web browsers such as atomic web browser
5) Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.
6) You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.
7) While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to "boot tethered".

Clearly this is far better than being stuck at the Apple logo until you can reach a computer. You can find instructions on how to set the Semitether jailbreak here.

RedSn0w Updated with Faster Jailbreak Option

Apple News

The iPhone Dev-Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.9b7 which brings a new faster jailbreak option.

After some feedback on reddit, we've decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer "stashing" the applications by default during the redsn0w run.  This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!).  However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications.  You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.

You can download the new RedSn0w updates for Mac here and Windows here.

Smart Cover Can Be Used to Break Passcode Into Your iPad [Video]

Apple News

According to 9to5MacA reports, has been discovered that lets anyone with a smart cover break into your iPad.

What the flaw allows:
The person who unlocks your iPad 2 will not have complete access to your iPad, but will be able to gain entrance to whatever you locked your iPad 2 on. If your iPad 2 went to sleep in Mail, Safari, Messages, Contacts, or Maps, you can imagine the sorts of personal information that can be viewed on your iPad.

If your iPad was on the home screen when you locked it, someone trying to break in can only control media and see what applications you have installed.

Steps to Recreate:
1) Lock a password protected iPad 2
2) Hold down power button until iPad 2 reaches turn off slider
3) Close Smart Cover
4) Open Smart Cover
5) Click cancel on the bottom of the screen

To get around this bug you can disable Smart Cover unlocking from the Settings:General menu. Hopefully Apple resolves it soon.
